SMALL BUSINESS LEADERSHIP AWARD – N.Z. BIG WIN FOR APPARELMASTER La Nuova Apparelmaster, Pryors Apparelmaster and Christchurch Apparelmaster were joint winners in The New Zealand Green Ribbon Awards. They were successful in winning the Small Business Leadership category. These Industrial laundries have independently verified analysis done on their respective carbon foot- prints and have been doing so for many years. Across the three sites there are different strengths in Sustainability. New Zealand’s laundry requirements are quite diverse, just like it’s weather. One focus for the whole group would not be the right fit for everyone (dare I say it – not sustainable). Each plant has their own focus depending on their market and their environment. Christchurch has consistently the lowest footprint – with their investment in technol- ogy, innovation and biofuel – their footprint is under 1/5th of the Australasian Benchmark. Pryors in Auckland has consistently and dramatically reduced their footprint year after year. Their consistent focus on doing it smarter and reinvest- ment in automation has dri- ven this, and their focus on water use has been inspiring. Taranaki’s La Nuova has focussed on some investment in automation but more-so on productivity improvement through years of lean implementation and learning. The synergy between productivity and sustainability is often described as ‘doing more with less’. The national awards are recognition that laundries can be market leading in areas such as Sustainability. As discussed at one of the Apparelmaster Conferences, ‘laundries were green before green was cool’. These three laundries (and potentially more to join them) are out to make the point known – that we supply and promote re- usable products. La Nuova, Pryors and Christchurch are proof that the laundry industry can be a prime example of what Sustainability is all about.
