20 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL DRYCLEANER & LAUNDERER AUGUST SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2015 CRESSBELLS- BALLARAT Cressbells was the final plant on our tour, and I think we were rather sorry there weren’t a cou- ple more. There is something addictive about snooping around other peoples busi- nesses (with their kind permis- sion!) Owner Vicki Boucher hosted this tour, highlighting an operational K4 solvent machine, and the introduction of new equipment, with an inviting counter area. The length of service of all employees including one employee of 60 years (part time) shows how well the business is managed. The plant processes everything from shirts to blankets, paramedics uniforms to bridal gowns, and utilises Greenearth and since October 2014 the K4 solvent. I spoke with Greg, the drycleaner, who has worked with white spirit, perc, GE and now K4. He pulled armfuls of garments direct from the K4 machine to demonstrate to delegates what the ‘smell’ they hear about is actually like. It is not unpleasant, and it does dissipate quickly. The K4 machine uses Kruessler soap. Greg said he is still running a double wash in the GE machine and he and no longer uses Tonsil powder as “it goes everywhere”. DCCS Computer system was again evident and I understand a conveyor is on the To Do List. Interestingly, because Ballarat Council is very proud of it’s history and the plant is located in a heritage-listed building, Vicki cannot change the facade, or even the colours of the paintwork, though she is allowed to make use of the windows for marketing, and really likes the posters and signage material provided by GreenEarth’s marketing arm. The olde worlde look is part of the city’s charm.
