The National : JULY - AUGUST 2016
Victorian Institutional Laundries Association Members, Life Members, and Guests got together 29th & 30th JUNE 2016 at The Mantra, Tullermarine, for the 49th A.G.M. Industry Allied Traders were also in attendance for the first time in three years. President Jack Runnalls welcomed all to the meeting and went through general housekeeping. Then he gave the meeting the benefit of his considered thoughts, which are always worth listening to. “I just want to say, as President, a few things, so bear with. “As I look around I see quite a few old friends, Doug Ash, Noel Brown, Bob Maslin, we have been on some sort of journey for quite a while now. “And new friends I met this mornings. Which reminds me of a truism: “Strangers are friends you have not yet met.” Jack reminisced when gatherings such as these were held in NSW and VIC regularly. “Something that as laundry managers we looked forward to, we learned from each other, form the speaker programs, and I believe we became better managers as a result. “Where have they gone? All these conferences and Seminars ... why aren’t the opportunities that once were widely available to the developing manager now available to new managers? “Shrinking numbers of linen services, with parent hospitals shedding what they now refer to as “non core activity”and a misguided notion they would save money. “People are not willing to put their hands up to organise committees, like this one. Not just us, in the community, sports, volunteerism itself. Perhaps this is a part of the problem. “The modern day phenomenom of people concentrating on their own patch. “There may be other reasons, these are just a few have I have thought of. “VILA is hanging on by the skin of its teeth, and right across Australia the only active organisation is TRLA SA, driven by Anthony Kingsley from Filterfab. “Today’s meeting, open to all the industry, is us running the flag up the pole to see who salutes. “We have attracted 14 Member and Life Members, 6 allied traders and to be honest, we had hoped for more.” Addressing the Allied Traders who did not attend the meeting, Jack said the Hospital Laundry Managers Association of Australia was born in 1967, the brain child of Ron Bruce. He saw a need and did something about it. 28 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL DRYCLEANER & LAUNDERER JULY AUGUST 2016 Victorian Institutional Laundries Association V.I.L.A. 49th A.G.M.
