The National : NOV DEC 2016
for “Australian of the Year”. A recognition he was so proud of. 2004 saw Bancrofts the first GreenEarth Dry Cleaner in the southern hemisphere. Dad was so happy. He travelled widely for GreenEarth in the following years, a highlight being the Clean Show we both attended in Las Vegas in 2007. As late as 2011, Dad travelled to attend a function in Sydney when GreenEarth was one of three finalists in the United Nations Environmental Awards 2011. Throughout Dad’s life he was obsessed with everything travel, flight and aviation. In 2007, he won an Ebay charity auction that saw him in a first class suite on the first commercial flight of the Airbus A380, seated between the Airbus Chairman and the Singapore Airlines Chairman. He maintained contacts and was invited to subsequent Air Shows around the world, feeding his insatiable appetite for everything aviation. He certainly had the travel bug, and passed it on to us, his kids, and his grandchildren. Taking his children and grandchildren away was a passion that never waned, despite the health issues that plagued Dad in his latter years. Travel was something Dad never wanted to let go. He built a collection of model aircraft to almost 1000 and a collection of aviation DVDs in the hundreds in his study that had a map of the World along an entire wall and Business Class seats from a Qantas plane that he relaxed on. Those of you that knew him, understood that he had an uncanny knack of communicating and manipulating meetings and conversations to make sure the outcome was exactly as he had planned, all while making you think it was your great idea he was adopting. So too, he was an amazing orator. The main things that never stopped were his organisational skills, his lists, his need for control and planning, putting family first always and his intense desire to always protect us, his three children, and his seven loving grandchildren. Roger Bancroft was a friend to many, a mentor, a trusted advisor to friends and business colleagues. He loved this industry and always put it above himself and his business. He lived by the motto that “The industry is bigger that all of us and a strong industry will benefit us all”. He always did things “His Way”. Nick then requested we turn our attention to the screen and appropriately, strains of Frank Sinatra filled the room as we shared again moments from Roger’s life on a big screen. I really don’t think there was a dry eye in the room. This address must have been an incredibly difficult task for Nick, but he kept it together. Nick and his sisters Danielle and Georgie were guests of the DIA and they enjoyed a great deal of reminiscing with friends of Roger throughout the evening.
