The National : DRYCLEANER JANFEB2017
46 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL DRYCLEANER & LAUNDERER JANUARY FEBRUARY 2017 model of the laundry was really useful in explaining the laundry to the Board. Girbau TBS Hygiene Tunnel: each of the 9 x 50kg compartments can be a different client, or product, and operating on a separate program. The tunnel processes 6-8lt per kg, with each compartment. All hydraulics are available in Australia, off the shelf, and customers really like that. On the monitor different blocks of colours and pictures make it easy for staff to identify a customer, or a type of work. Black Box: an extra hygiene filter for hospital grade work. Extraction press: 50 kg batches of work are pressed and sent to the dryers. Auto Lint Cleaners: along with barrier wall ensure lint is removed from the air. They are effective, the room was spotless. Dryers: there are two 100kg (double batch) dryers. And a gap where the third planned dryer will sit. Vacuum: pieces can be fed to dryers from trolleys via suction tube. Ironer: a Girbau PC120 and DRB 3+ feeder with guarding. (Matthew advised there had been a stuff up with the ironer, and rather than muck their customer around, Girbau flew a replacement to Australia at a cost of an extra $25,000.) Shane said “Currently we operate very much below capacity. We ran our first loads on Monday, December 19th. And during the month to now we have gone up from 3.5 ton a day to 4 ton. Not even close to what we can achieve. When the laundry opened on December 19th, only four members of staff had laundry experience from St. Vincent and the rest were new employees via Toowoomba Clubhouse. Work flows through the ironer at the rate of 600 sheets per hour day in and day out. A comfortable rate that does not stress the employees who are learning the ropes. Four lanes for hand feeding small pieces. The ironer rejects sheets that are not up to standard straight into the pit, staff love it! From quality sheets for motels, to mid range for motels and day surgery, the ironer handles it all with ease. VANGUARD LAUNDRY SERVICES EXPLAINS – OUR STORY A locally developed Toowoomba company created by the Toowoomba Clubhouse, a not-for-profit organisation supporting peo- ple who have a lived experience of mental illness and struggle to secure employment. We are a self-sustaining social enterprise that helps change lives. “Any surplus we make is re-invested into improving our laundry services or supporting local mental health employment projects. “When businesses use Vanguard Laundry Services, not only do they get a high quality laundry service, but they also help provide jobs and training for local people. It is fantastic how the Toowoomba community has embraced our vision, the support is great.” n Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, seen here with David Gillman of Girbau Australia, was impressed by the art work which revolved around laundry machinery and packing crates. A garbage bin made from piping, overhead lights from washer barrels. Even planter boxes from dryers.
