Ransomware is real and it can effect your business badly if nothing is done to remove it from your system. This screenshot shows a variation of the WannaCry malware. A major cleaner was targeted in the end of May, and this affected their business in a huge and devastating way, wiping out their ability to access their computers for more than a day. (Think about that: it might not sound much but if you have dry stores, agencies, routes, and the like ....) What does ransomware do? It affects files on your computer and encrypts them so they cannot be used by you. (There are other types that specifically target your files and threaten to publish them if you don’t pay.) Once you pay the ransom the files are decrypted and your machine is workable again. But! If you try and sort it out yourself, you can actually do more harm than good. You must run Windows Updates on all of your windows PC’s. You also need to make sure all of your Virus definitions are up to date by checking for updates on each PC. What is ransomware? What is it? The computer screen appears like the picture at right, with a LOCK prominently displayed. The system tells you your computer is locked and asks you to pay a ransom in Bitcoins (which is an electronic currency available at your local Bank.)
