The National : JUNE-SEPT 2017
10 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL DRYCLEANER & LAUNDERER JUNE JULY AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2017 “We needed new presses and one month later the bearings on the dry cleaning machine needed to be replaced. The conveyor is an alphabetical manual operation, not connected to the HP Computer with multi screen. Jessie’s Dad dried out the electronics and motors of the boiler. INDUSTRY ASSISTANCE The young couple are very grateful to the industry and the DIA for their assistance and moral support. DIA’s CEO Brian Tonkin was a constant presence on the phone. Michael Murphy (of Penguin Drycleaners, VIC, fame) came by to help salvage the shop, as did former owner of Perfix Drycleaners, David Murphy, who came down to lend a hand. Howard Duffy rang with offers of coming up from Canberra to help press wedding gowns. George and Liz from Ideal Drycleaners in Rockhampton offered spare presses. Kathie Smith of Richard Jay helped out with a second hand washer extractor ... Perfix have since bought a new one to replace a second washer that could not be repaired We spoke about how Lismore itself copes with these threats and inundations, and I was surprised to hear that some companies have virtually “flood proofed” their stock, if not their premises. One shoe shop, for example, has hydraulic shelves which can raise into the roof cavity. Another company has “flood gates” internal flood resistant walls that secure the property. Are you getting the wash and fold business that you could? Do you advertise? Very little effort involved 90% of the time. It is money for jam.
