The National : OCTNOVDEC2017 DRYCLEANER
THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL DRYCLEANER & LAUNDERER OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2017 15 VALE - Trevor John Davis It is my unhappy duty to record the passing of one of our industry greats, Trevor John Davis. Trevor passed after a brief illness, he was 93, and still playing golf every week. I attended his funeral, along with Howard Duffy and Carol Westley. Perhaps there were others from our industry there, and I apologise if I missed you. The service was held at St. Jude’s Church of England, Randwick, and attended by a sizable number of people from Trevor’s many circles of friends. His daughters Deborah and Tracey, and grand-children spoke of their great love for this energetic and good natured man and how they will miss him. Officially, Trevor retired in 2007, and his contribution to the industry was recognised at the Annual General Meeting of the Drycleaning Institute of Australia, but a large groups of friends also held a Farewell Luncheon in 2012. The photograph above is Trevor and Mary, basking in the love and affection of many friends. It was a happy day. This remarkable man has contributed to the Australian drycleaning industry, NSW in particular, in so many ways. From the time he joined the industry in 1957 – 55 years service – Trevor contributed enormously to the education of our industry. He achieved many ‘firsts’ and in fact, organised and ran the first of many Cost Group Meetings in NSW. Add to this has tenure as President of the Allied Traders Association of NSW for 6 years, he was a founding Member and helped organise the Allied Traders into supporting the annual TwinClean conferences. The Allied Traders Night was always a huge hit, the entertainment hard to top from year to year. Trevor was a Member of the DIA NSW Committee for 8 years. At the Annual General Meeting of the DIA- NSW, 2007, when President Tony Kaye took to the podium and in a very eloquent speech spoke of how a man in the industry had changed his life when he spoke with him some years ago, helping him in practical ways and urging membership of DIA. Tony said it had become clear speaking with other cleaners at DIA NSW that this lifelong quiet achiever had made a huge difference to drycleaners throughout the state with his wise advice, never ending curiosity, and professionalism. Trevor was delighted by the recognition and Treasurered his award. Trevor’s company achieved many firsts and it is worthwhile reflecting that Trevor was just an ordinary bloke, yet he: • Imported the first Steam Carpet Cleaner into Australia from North Carolina, USA, and introduced “Do It Yourself” carpet cleaning options for customers via their drycleaner. • Imported the first ozone machines into Australia, allowing drycleaners to deal with smoke affected garments. • Introduced Apparel Master Industrial Garment Cleaning into Australia. • Introduced the first Hydrocarbon machine into Australia. • Sponsored Kirks Suede Life USA (the largest Suede and Leather Cleaning company in the world) to introduce the first Suede and Leather cleaning into Australia. • Sponsored Marcia Miller Todd, one of the leading speakers on Drycleaning in the USA, to give ‘Shopgirl Training’ at Drycleaning Meetings throughout Australia and Tasmania. Marcia returned several times, and was the owner and editor of “Canadian Fabricare”. Her daughter Rebecca is now the editor. • Organised and ran 29 Sanitone Conventions across Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii (to improve the standard of drycleaning in Australia. The regulars included Keith and Trish Anderson, Jim Chisholm and Noel Peters. • Guest Speaker at numerous conventions throughout Australia, New Zealand and the United States. Thank You, Trevor, for your service and wisdom so generously shared. Ten years in retirement, enjoying your friends, your clubs, golf with your daughters and plenty of happy times with your grandchildren, I know you had a great innings but you will be missed by so many who remember you well Trevor John Davis, and his great love, his beautiful bride of 61 years, Mary Agnus.
