The National : JAN FEB MARCH 2018 DRYCLEANER
8 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL DRYCLEANER & LAUNDERER JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH 2018 Facebook is an interesting medium. I enjoy it for the way it allows me to catch up with family and friends, many of whom are far flung, these days. And of course, news, science, public opinion pieces and let’s face it ... LOLS. Something else I enjoy is when one of my readers likes a post on the NATIONAL’s facebook page, and I think, “I must have a look at their page.” And so I discovered Fine Cotton Dry Cleaners, Wahroonga, and their lively facebook page. John Pemble has now been a drycleaner for 35 years. John Pemble and I have been known to each other for many years, though our paths seldom cross. He told me that as a boy he came home from finishing Year 10 and was told “I have a job for you, you start tomorrow.” (Hands up if that was your career path!) So John was introduced, age 16, to Murray Burke at Merrylands Dry Cleaners. Murray was a stalwart of the industry, always attending DIA Meetings and Seminars, often bringing his staff to the practical evenings on “Shop Girls” as we called them back in the day, “Spotting”, and he served on the DIA NSW Executive for many years, where he considered the health of the industry, how to improve it, and quietly made his point. I can’t imagine a better start for a young bloke. John went from Merrylands to Lawrence Drycleaners, under John Eisman, all over the place. John also worked with Serge Pelleri at Lindus Drycleaners, and then went back to Lawrence, came back to Lindus and realised ... he had to have his own business! So (his words!) he begged, borrowed and stole to buy a Lindus franchise, which he operated for five years. At the end of that, he bought out the lease, the machinery and all, and Fine Cotton Dry Cleaners was born. That was 22 years ago. That’s all background to his 35 year career. Let’s look at John Pemble today, and his beautiful plant, Fine Cotton Dry Cleaners, Wahroonga. TODAY Wahroonga is a leafy, sleepy suburb on the Upper North Shore, two stops short of Hornsby. It still has the Fine Cotton Dry Cleaners Wahroonga, NSW I don’t know if you can see the sweet little boy in his private school uniform, but it’s one of several top notch schools in the area. There is plenty of parking out front of Fine Cotton Dry Cleaning.
