operator never waited for the machine. Not realistic day in and day out as one staff member is not going to do it. Nick said this is true, but you wouldn’t (shouldn’t) leave one person on the machine all day. “At Bancrofts our people do different jobs throughout the day, as it is more interesting for them, and causes less injury and bodily stress. A variety of jobs uses the body more evenly than 6 - 8 hours of doing repetition.” Nick said to take his comments further, it is also a Manual Handling issue. Daniel said Workers Compensation Claims from steaming and picking up irons leading to shoulder injuries are real. A pants station will save you money, and dramas. And again, based on wages, a pants station producing 150 pairs a day will save you $375,000 in ten years. And savings start the first week. Matthew Hyde added “I did 25 pair per hour on a manual, and went to an auto. I was able to service customers, empty machines, and it was more pleasant. Shirley Naylor said that is an important point and added the comment ... “We complain that staff are hard to find. Think who is coming into are industry, and why they leave so soon. They don’t’ want to do hot, hard labour. And if you have the right machinery, and the workplace is pleasant, they will stay.” Kerryn Wollington asked about tapered pants and Dan agreed that different aspects – corduroy linings for example - will affect your rate. But we are talking high volume production, generally business pants. Dan added that for the best result on a jacket you need tension. But in a steam tunnel or a hot box you can certainly process a lot of school blazers and the lighter fabric blazers. It can effectively pay back in 15 weeks and today’s are better quality than the old tunnel and hot boxes of 40 years ago. In response to questions Daniel said Spencer Systems has diesel trucks on the road, they are always looking for new hybrids, any way they can reduce overheads. On solvents he added, to do really nice silk work you need GreenEarth or hydrocarbons, then blow or steam it. Very little work in finishing light fabrics. Thanks Dan, always a pleasure!
