The National : DRYCLEANER MAY AUGUST 2019
48 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL DRYCLEANER & LAUNDERER MAY JUNE JULY AUGUST 2019 INTRODUCTION, AND A BRIEF HISTORY. In 1928 my grandfather George Bogiatzis started this business, with two broom sticks, a copper boiler and a 14 pound iron. Fast forward 90 years and we have the most modern equipment in the country and employ 40 people. We service Charters Towers, Townsville and Airlie Beach. We process over 20,000 items every day. When I joined the business in 1988, 30 years ago, it was mainly a dry cleaning business with a little laundry. Back then my father Michael and my Uncles Luke and Nick owned the business. One day one of them said that they were in business for 60 years. I thought what a milestone that is! It was mentioned in general conversation and we all went back to our jobs. There was no celebration, no morning tea, and no acknowledgments of such an achievement. It was “that’s nice”; now let’s get on with it. Such was their work ethic. No nonsense, get on the job. Which was common for people of their generation. The Bogiatzis Brotherhood spent a lot of time working. It wasn’t easy being an ethnic kid during the great depression. It was even harder during the War. 90 Years A Laundry The story of Great Northern Laundry, with observations of the highs and lows and facts of life in a Family Business, presented by Mark Bogiatzis to TwinClean 2018 It is hard to express the profound effect this honest, humourous, searing account had on the launderers at TwinClean. I know Mark came in for plenty of back slapping for being so up front and telling it like it is, warts and all. 2018 was a big year for Great Northern Laundry, Townsville, which turned 90 years in June. Here is their history, and their story, as related by Mark Bogiatzis.
