The National : JAN FEB MARCH 2018 DRYCLEANER
THE POWER OF CONNECTION TwinClean 2018 is jointly sponsored by the Drycleaning Institute of Australia, and the Laundry Association of Australia. A combined Committee of allied traders, launderers and drycleaners is working together to bring all Members the best possible experience. Our sister organisations in the USA, the DLI and the TRSA, are both sending speakers. An indicator of the advances made on behalf of our twin industries as we work together with international organisations to see a healthier, more profitable environment for all Members. Electricity and Gas usage is common to both drycleaners and launderers of all descriptions. At one time, energy was number six on the list of cost centres for a commercial launderer, now it is number three, after labour and linen. There are launderers in the middle of three year contracts that might not have enough fat to ride out the electricity rises if they can not find ways to reduce their outgoings. Drycleaners are finding the costs associated with operating their plants are rising at a dramatic rate. Exciting Speakers to the joint sessions will tackle topics that affect all of us while break out sessions will enable discussion on specific areas of interest. Your input is sought - topics, speakers! IT’S COMING! BUT WHERE DID IT COME FROM? What is TwinClean? Years ago - from way back, up to 2005 - there existed in our industry a wonderful event called TWINCLEAN. So named because it was an opportunity for drycleaners and launderers to get together and enjoy the bene- fits of a wide ranging program of powerful speakers, 5 star venues, in exotic locations. In those far off days many launderers were also drycleaners, and visa versa, with the hundreds of family businesses that dotted the landscape from coast to coast. Before those days, Allied Traders drove all over the countryside, calling on country drycleaners and launderers of every description, and they could be away a week at a time. Order book in their pocket, passing on the news, information from overseas shows and explaining new products and systems, it was a gruelling life. No mobile phones! For some, TwinClean presented an annual opportunity to visit another state, as the conferences rotated around WA, NSW, TAS, ACT, SA and QLD. It didn’t hurt that before the advent of the cheap airfares we take for granted today, the annual conference provided a holiday of sorts on the company tax bill! Airfares interstate were comparatively high in price and one pays less to fly to Hawaii today than we used to pay to fly Sydney-Perth. Registrations in those days were often in the order of $500 and hotels were 5 star. And always, there was the pull of meeting up with fellow industry friends. So why did it end? It overbalanced. The industry, the world, changed. Today, TwinClean is lean, with a very reasonable $345 registration fee, cheap airfares, and a hotel – Crowne Plaza Surfers – which is of a high standard, without being ridiculously expensive.
